Wood Flooring
Wood flooring is becoming increasingly popular in homes. Its beauty in connection with its durability makes it a wise choice.
It is also relatively easy to maintain. Also very appealing is the fact that most wood floors come from sustainable sources,
thus it is considered environmentally friendly.
Here are the three main types of Wood Flooring:
Solid Wood Flooring
Durable, long lasting, and beautiful, these floors are a popular choice. Properly cared for solid wood
can last many generations! They also come in a variety of styles, using many different types of wood. Solid wood floors can
laid in planks, strips, or several other forms. Some popular woods used included walnut, maple, bamboo, cork, and many more.
Care should be taken on wood floors. They can be damaged by scratches, dents, and excessive moisture.
Maintenance and Care:
When installed, solid wood needs to be sanded and finished. After this, regular care consists mostly of dusting and polishing.
If it has the proper finish, wood floors can be damp mopped. When worn, solid wood can be refinished many times by sanding and
finishing.
Engineered Wood Flooring
While appearing much like solid wood, engineered floors are manufactured. They consist of many
layers of lower quality wood topped with a solid wood. This process lowers the cost of the product. Generally these floors
can be treated much like solid wood, except they cannot be refinished as many times.
Maintenance and Care: Most engineered
floors are installed with a factory finish. Regular care consists of dusting and polishing. With the proper finish, wood
floors can be damp mopped. When worn, some engineered floors can be refinished once.
Laminate "Wood" Flooring
With a much lower cost, and ease of installation, laminate floors are becoming increasingly popular.
They can have a great variety of looks and style, often looking close to actual wood floors. Laminate floors, however, are more
delicate and cannot be refinished.
Maintenance and Care: Regular care involves dusting and polishing. Laminates can usually
be damp mopped with great caution. Too much moisture will damage them. When worn or damaged, they must be replaced.
